Books that Build Your Faith

Cara faith thoughts, Fiction Friday, giveaway 10 Comments

Today, I thought I’d deviate from the traditional Fiction Friday theme long enough to talk about some books I’m reading that are perfect for building faith. There’s something about the first month of a new year that makes me more intentional. This year I want to read more books that will build my faith and mind as well as the fiction I inhale. Already this year I’ve read Operating in the Courts of Heaven by Robert Henderson. It resonated with me because it approaches prayer by looking at the legal structure of heaven.

One book that I am very excited about is Havilah Cunnington’s Stronger than the Struggle. I have participated in several of her video studies at Truth to Table, some with the book, and some just by the video. She has good content. But I’m very interested to dive into the study for this book. It’s about uncomplicating spiritual battles. Sometimes as American Christians we see a spiritual battle in everything…and nothing. I am eager to dive into looking at what can be the root cause so I know better how to approach the struggles in my life and in others’ lives. If you’re interested, she’d running a free global book club for this book with video teachings, a study guide, and more. I’m pulling together a group of friends to read and discuss the book as well. I don’t know about you, but I need the accountability!

I’m also very excited about a book that I picked up this week at Lifeway. I love Stormie Omartian’s prayer books. I’m a firm believer in praying Scripture and learning from the wisdom of others. She has a new book out The Power of Praying Through Fear. I’m in a season of self-exploration where God is showing me that one thing that makes release hard for me is fear of the unknown and the lack of control. I’m eager to dive into this book and confront fear head on.

Finally, this month many in our church are reading through A Praying Life by Paul E. Miller. I read it in the fall and am skimming it again with the church. It’s a practical book on how to make prayer a more meaningful and pervasive part of your life. I intend to pray. I mean to pray. This book is a tool for helping incorporate intention and focus behind the want to.

  1. I recently read 10 things a husband needs from his wife. It wasn’t necessarily focused on spiritual growth per se, but I learned a lot about spiritual growth that is needed to be that wife for my husband.

  2. I appreciate this comment. Am going to check it out. So many times people are self focused… if only our focus was on our spouse instead of ourselves. Looking forward to checking it out.

  3. I read A Praying Life last year, it is a very helpful book. I am reading Idols of the Heart by Elyse Fitzpatrick now, trying to take it a chapter at a time so that it sinks in better. I need to be aware of how many things have become idols, and how to focus and depend on God instead. I appreciate your book recommendations (and your books)!

  4. More Thank Just Making It, by Erin Odom — it’s an easy book to read, with many Biblical verses/examples, and about money saving tips!

  5. Thanks!! One of my goals this years is to read a non-fiction book each month. It’s challenging me since I LOVE fiction!!!
Adding some of these to my list!! Thank you!!!
