Fiction Friday: Mind Games & More

Cara Fiction Friday 45 Comments

It’s been bitter in Indiana this week, and I’m headed to San Antonio for a quick trip for ACFW board meetings. We’ll be planning the 2019 National Conference and strategizing how to keep ACFW an effective organization for its members, aspiring and published Christian fiction authors. San Antonio is one of my favorite cities, and the ACFW board members are some of my favorite people, so I’m looking forward to the quick trip. I’m also hoping to get a lot of writing done.

For today’s Fiction Friday, I thought I’d talk about a couple romantic suspense books I’ve enjoyed recently.

Mind Games is the latest from Nancy Mehl, and it is an intense read. Kaely Quinn is a profiler with the FBI, but finds herself in intense danger when a reporter releases the information that she is the daughter of a serial killer. Someone is convinced she knew about her father’s crimes and did nothing about it…and to that person, it’s time she pays for the sins of her father. Noah is the reluctant agent assigned to be her partner and protector. As someone starts recreating deaths of killers whose cases she consulted on, Kaely knows she is running out of time. Will they stop the killer before he stops her? You’ll have to read Mind Games to find out. I found this book to be a compelling read and I can’t wait for the next one in this series. It’s truly Nancy’s best book to date.

Irene Hannon is a favorite with many Christian fiction romantic suspense readers. Her latest, Hidden Peril, was another great installment. Set in St. Louis, you’ll see glimpses of past heroes, but the action centers on a woman Kristen Dane who runs a shop that highlights sustainable products from around the world. She’s worked hard to create a place where their goods can be sold and help provide support to needy groups in hard countries. When first the woman who works for her is murdered and then a customer, local detective Luke Carter finds himself interacting with Kristen and slowly falling in love. There are so many layers and intricacies to the plot that I couldn’t stay away. Hidden Peril was a great read and will satisfy readers of romantic suspense. I truly enjoyed this romantic suspense. The romance was realistic and the suspense a fresh, creative twist. A good read!

Anna Lee Huber is an author who’s books I discovered last year. I really enjoy her Lady Darby series, set in early 1800s England, so when I saw this latest book, This Side of Murder, set in post WWI England, I had to give it a try. This novel is filled with complex characters, a fascinating piece of history, and a plot that keeps twisting and turning. It has a gothic feel to it as the events happen on an island that the characters can’t escape thanks to the weather.  I really enjoy the complexity this author builds into her plots, and the final twist left me with an eagerness for the next book. I love it when authors do that!

This last book releases in February. Never Let Go is the latest book from author Elizabeth Goddard and a fun twist on a romantic suspense. Willow, the heroine, is a forensic genealogist and is searching for a young woman who was kidnapped from the hospital when she was a newborn. The challenge is Willow is in imminent danger that only intensifies as she hunts for the young woman. Add in a man from her past who has his own secrets, and it’s a dangerous search.

I have an extra copy of Mind Games, and will gift that to one lucky reader. All you have to do is use the form below. Good luck!

  1. I’m in Texas so winter for us is when we hit the freezing mark during the day. It has happened a few times so I think it qualifies. 😉 Thanks for the giveaway. I’ve heard some great buzz about Nancy’s book and I’ve got it on my TBR list.

  3. Living in South Carolina, we have pretty mild winters. We did have some snow early in December but lately it’s been in the upper 40’s or 50’s during the day.

  5. Louisiana hasn’t had a hard winter so far. Mostly what I’ve heard commented down here about the weather is that “Mother Nature needs to get her hormones under control.”

  6. I live in Rochester, NY. Yes we have winter! It really hasn’t been as bad yet as some years but it has been really cold{it was 13 when I checked about 7AM this morning} the last few days and we have a few inches of snow on the ground.

I don’t mind cold as long as there’s some pretty snow. Bitter cold without snow is not my favorite. And in Indiana we will get days and days with no sunshine. I need my natural Vitamin D!

  7. Here in Lubbock, Texas we had our winter, 10&1/2 inches of snow in the middle of December!!! We are having freezing nights and warm days most of the time, with a few cold days thrown in. Oh, all that snow? Melted within 3 days when temperatures hit the 40’s!!! Brown Christmas for us.

  8. Off and on. We’ve had one good snow storm and are expecting ice this weekend, but it’s been pretty warm – 50s – for the last month. I’m ready for snow!

50s is too warm! We’ve had such a mild winter it’s been nuts. But tomorrow there supposed to get 4-6 inches. I just hope it’s done when I get home Sunday so I can actually get home 🙂

  9. We’ve had a few tastes of winter, but it hasn’t gotten bad yet. It has turned pretty cold, so I’m expecting it to come at any point!

  10. Off and on in North Carolina, the western part of the state definitely has with 15 to 20 inches of snow in places, eastern N.C. has been cold and windy.

  11. Our winter in central Kansas comes and goes. After 60 degree weather last week we had rain all day today that turned to snow tonight. Our weather is quite changeable.

  12. Oh my dear Cara, winter is not nearly over! January is about the middle of winter – and it’s such a long, cold month. We’ve only had two -40 days yet this winter so I’m sure more are yet to come. My husband always has to travel for work the third week of January and NEVER FAILS – we have a blizzard and it’s -40 all week and I’m left to shovel and clear our yard of snow. Winter will end sometime in March – if we’re lucky.

  13. I am from and live in San Antonio!! 👐
We have not had a really brutal winter, although anything under 70° is too cold for me!!

  14. I’m from Western Maryland and we had snow back in November, but none since then. Temperatures in the past several days have been in the 20’s. Mainly though, we’ve had lots of rain.

  15. Yes! We had a snow storm yesterday & it is still snowing. We live in the St. Louis area (but out in the country on bad roads!)

  16. It’s been pretty mild here in Oklahoma but we had a fun surprise when it snowed for about 10 minutes this morning ❄️❄️❄️

  17. I live in Arlington, Texas and it’s been in the 40’s. I have never read any books by Nancy Mehl. Hope you have a productive trip and that you get to eat some good Mexican food while your in San Antonio! Thanks for the giveaway.

  18. Normally we have cold snowy winters in Minnesota, it’s been cold but we don’t have much snow. Which is okay with me, and my 83 year old Mom! I am her chauffeur and the dry sidewalks are great for her!

  19. I’m glad we finally got a good snow today! I forgot to change from my workday alarm, which meant I was up at 5 am. I decided to stay up when I saw the view out the window. I watched the snow come down for hours!

  20. We’ve definitely had winter, but not a ton of snow. I live in South-central Wisconsin and it’s only in the 20’s, but no snow makes it seem like a mild winter! 😊 Which I love!

  21. I assume this giveaway is still open. All the books you reviewed sound great. It’s very much winter here. We currently have freezing rain with snow in the forecast for tomorrow. And we had snow last weekend.
