The Daughter of Highland Hall

Cara reviews; 33 Comments

If you’re a fan of Downton Abbey, you should read Carrie Turansky’s books. The Daughter of Highland Hall is the second of her books in the Edwardian Brides series, but stands on its own. At its essence it is a story of a young woman who is pressed by expectations so high there is no way she can meet them.

Katherine Ramsey has been raised to expect that her life will be fulfilled if she has a season that ends with a marriage proposal from a landed and titled man. Jonathan Foster is studying to be a doctor and determined to help the list of these. Their goals are completely different, but as they spend time together and Katherine’s season begins to fall apart she wonders who she really is and what she should truly want for her future.

This is a story of a young woman learning how to stand on her own despite others expectations. Katherine, like so many, must learn her own heart and what she dreams for the future.Β The road is far from straight, but in the process she comes to know who she truly is. The story is well-written and compelling. A great read for early 20th Century historical romance fans.

What if the title, the estate, the life of security and splendor… what if it isn’t enough?

Strong-willed and beautiful, debutante Katherine Ramsey feels ready to take the London social season by storm, and she must. Her family estate, Highland Hall, has been passed to older male cousin Sir William Ramsey, and her only means of securing her future is to make a strong debut and find a proper husband. With her all-knowing and meddling aunt as a guide, Katherine is certain to attract suitors at the lavish gatherings, sparkling with Great Britain’s elite.

When a shocking family scandal sidelines Katherine, forcing her out of the social spotlight, she keeps a low profile, volunteering with the poor in London’s East End. Here Katherine feels free from her predictable future, and even more so as a friendship with medical student Jonathan Foster deepens and her faith in God grows. But when Katherine is courted anew by a man of wealth and position, dreams of the life she always thought she wanted surface again. Torn between tradition and the stirrings in her heart for a different path, she must decide whom she can trust and loveβ€”and if she will choose a life serving others over one where she is served.

  2. I have loved Carrie Turansky’s books, and Daughter of Highland Hall was wonderful! Looking forward to the 3rd in the series, Rufuge at Highland Hall next fall. In the meantime, I’ll read some Cara Putnam books!! πŸ™‚ Always a great story there!

  3. I have enjoyed discovering how similar the societal rules, during the Edwardian period were to those of the Regency period. I would have thought some of the rules would have relaxed in the 100 years in between.

  5. I have read the Governess of Highland Hall and enjoyed it so much. I am on the waiting list for Daughter at our local library. Before this book even came out the waiting list was long. Carrie has a wonderful way of bringing us into the Edwardian era.

  6. I love watching Downtown Abbey and reading books about the Edwardian era. I haven’t had the opportunity to read Carrie Turansky’s new book yet and look forward to having a chance to win a copy of her book. Thanks!

  7. I leaned about this through the review. I know the author really did alot of research to make this book so fun and realistic !

  8. My only exposure to the Edwardian era has been through the Downton Abbey television series. I am completely captivated by the attire, decorum, and the delineation between socio-economic classes.
The connection that Carrie or her marketing director made between her book and the television show was genius! It’s what captured my attention through social media.

While historical and biblical fiction are my favorite genres, I’ve unintentionally skirted this time period. If I win this would be my first #ChriFic of this period and my first Carrie Turansky novel.

Thank you, Cara, for hosting this giveaway!

  10. I love all fiction written during this period…when things were much more prim & proper…at least on the surface. Add to that the fact that this is Christian fiction, the recipe results in a wonderful reading experience!

So true that much of it was on the surface. And the way they still essentially “Sold” women into marriage is surprising. At least to me πŸ™‚

  13. Hi Friends, thanks so much for your kind comments! It’s wonderful to hear how many of you enjoy English historical novels and Downton Abbey. I loved doing the research for this series, including two trips to England. I’m writing book 3 now, A Refuge at Highland Hall. It takes place during WW1. The hero is a very brave British pilot. Penny Ramsey steps forward as the heroine this time. I can’t wait to share this next story with you. Thanks for inviting me over, Cara!

  14. Oooh, this looks good! My daughter is a huge Downton fan and she has a birthday coming up. What a great gift idea…and there would be enough time for me to read it first. πŸ™‚
